Marsh Planting Week at Nature Center of Shaker Lakes
May 21 through 26, 9 am to noon

Volunteers are invited to help plant native species in the final stage of our Marsh Restoration Project. We will be planting wildflowers and grasses, shrubs, and small trees. Wear water-proof boots if you have them. We can provide them if you do not. Bring a water bottle. http://shakerlakes.org/


Can You Donate a Kid’s Bike?
When: Tues, May 22, 5:00 - 8:00 pm
Do you have bikes and/or bike helmets, in good shape, that your kids have long outgrown? Are they taking up space in your garage or basement? Problem Solved!  Donate them to Fairfax Elementary School in Cleveland Heights and help kids who are just learning to ride and do not have a bicycle of their own. Please bring them to the school, located at 3150 Fairfax Road, between 5:00 and 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 22. Email pamandbruce@earthlink.net for more information or to make other drop off arrangements.  We’d like to have a handful of bikes to give away on May 25th, Fairfax’s Field Day and Bike Rodeo. bikesintheheights.org

House History Workshop

Description: Thursday, May 24, 7 p.m. Cleveland Heights House History Workshop. Lee Road Library. To register, two weeks prior to the event visit www.heightslibrary.org, or call 216-932-3600. Speaker: Kara Hamley O'Donnell, city planner, City of Cleveland Heights. Using local research tools and online sites, this workshop will teach participants how to research their home’s history, including when it was built and by whom, past owners and historic photos. Learn how to use Plain Dealer indexes to find out what may have happened at a property—home sales, lost pets, society events and more. Participants who preregister and provide a mailing address will receive advance information to start a search on a property. Others can receive the information at a later date.

Help revive the Cedar Lee Mini Park! Donate plants or your labor

Description: Memorial Day Weekend: Great volunteer opportunity if you like to get your hands dirty and create something from nothing! Revive the Cedar Lee Mini Park with Heights Arts and volunteers extraordinaire Julie and Gary Lustic. They need perennials such as hosta (lots and lots of hosta), grasses, daylilies, black-eyed susans, coneflowers, and ferns. We'd like you to dig them up from your garden and bring them to the minipark between 9 and 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 26. Stewardship Saturdays at Nature Center of Shaker Lakes

Volunteers interested in land stewardship are invited to join our new monthly volunteer program, Stewardship Saturdays. Every fourth Saturday volunteers will be involved in invasive plant removal and native planting in the marsh and other habitats. Dress for the weather. Wear waterproof boots if you have them. If not, we can provide some. Tools, snacks, and coffee provided. Bring a water bottle. Bike to Work WEEK
May 14 ‐ 18, Bike to Work Week. Just do it!

Monday, May 14
7 p.m. The Art of Reading: Cleveland's WPA-Era Ceramics. Lee Road Library. Speaker: Dr. Mark Bassett, scholar in residence, Cleveland Institute of Art. During the 1930s, Cleveland artists created handmade figurines for librarians and teachers to use in teaching reading, history, and culture through visualization. Historian Mark Bassett will discuss the innovative ceramics designed then, including those made for Cleveland Heights public schools, many of which are now on view at the Lee Road Library.

Monday, May 14
7:30 PM CH and UH city councils meet with the CHUH school district. Cleveland Heights Community Center, corner of Monticello and Mayfield, Cleveland Heights. Open to the public. Confirmed topics of discussion: Millikin School disposition, schools facilities planning, and the disposition of proposed empty school buildings (Gearity, Fairfax, and Noble).


Tuesday, May 15
You are invited to help “green up” Hope Gardens on Tuesday, May 15, from 5:30 to 9:00PM. We will be cleaning up the area and preparing the garden beds for spring planting. There will be light and even some heavy work for all who participate. You’ll get outdoors and enjoy some fresh air. Tools will be available, but bring your own gloves. Bike or Walk to School Day-CHUH Schools
The inaugural, national Bike to School Day is set for May 9. Kids who ride a bicycle to school will be part of a first-ever event that is expected to grow. Walking to school is good too. Cleveland Heights and University Heights are perfect places for kids to navigate, with quiet side streets, sidewalks, cross guards, and low automobile speed limits.To assure safety, parents can practice the route with their child, accompany him or her, or arrange for a group of students to walk or bike together. Historic District Bike Tour in Cleveland Heights

May is both Bike Month and Preservation Month, so the Heights Bicycle Coalition and the Cleveland Heights Historical Society are joining forces for a free lecture and bicycle tour of historic districts in the southern part of Cleveland Heights. A half hour of lecture starting at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Church, 2747 Fairmount Boulevard, will highlight the five historic districts on the south side of Cleveland Heights and the architectural features and styles to look for on the bike ride. Bike parking is available behind the church. Riders are asked to wear helmets and will be given a waiver to sign before the ride begins. The ride will end by noon, back at St. Paul’s. Rain date: Sat.
